Q: Heat from the speaker Ans: this is the variables that might affect the study, as a sound is 'transmitted and heard' by the plant through changes in the pressure such as vibration. It is not heat from the speakers that influenced growth.
But heat might affect the pressure energy. I respect your conclusion as to the viability of the experiment but to arrive at that conclusion without reading the full text of the study may be inconclusive as well.
Surprised to see that the science would draw conclusions after only 4 days. Also, what was the duration of time the music was played? Even more baffling and drastically unscientific is the reporting on heat from the speakers? Exactly how did they ascertain that it was the heat from the speakers that influenced the growth? What was the difference in temperature?
Was it equally experienced among all the plants? Is that the only mitigating factor when placing a fan there? Circulation of air, CO2, etc. Sorry but this science or at least the display of evidence is incomplete and hence flawed and inconclusive.

However, sound is transmitted through waves that first travel through a medium before reaching our eardrums. For instance, sound may travel through the air; when sound travels through air, it causes particles in the air to vibrate. This causes our eardrums to vibrate, which is then converted into sound. It is entirely possible that plants "hear" music, even though they will not "hear it" in the same way that we hear music. Plants can pick up the vibrations caused by sound waves, which can then impact the plant itself.
It is believed that the vibrations caused by music may stimulate something called "protoplasmic movement", the movement of protoplasm a matter which composes all animal and plant cells. Stimulated protoplasm can stimulate a plant into growing. There have been multiple studies regarding the potential impact of music on plants. One study, conducted in , found that the growth rate of plants can be accelerated when plants are exposed to music. This particular study found that violin sounds had a stronger effect on plant growth than other types of musical sounds.
Another research held around the same time discovered that music even impacted seeds' development. This article describes a project-based learning activity that studies the influence of music on seed germination. Part of the student project is to conduct a literature search on the influence of music on plants, and possibly also on people its biological, psychological, and social effects.
The project is contextualized in the indigenous practice of making music while planting crops. There is a growing body of literature suggesting that music can improve crop yields. Students are required to follow the key features of project-based learning to plan and execute an inquiry to determine the influence of music on seed germination. This can lead to larger amounts of water, nutrients, and growth regulators entering the plant cell. The article also reflects on data obtained from high school biology students as they engage in the learning activity.

Work by De Beer and by De Beer and Petersen a has shown that indigenous knowledge holds affective affordances in the biology classroom, as it can promote students' interest in plant studies. Here, I provide an example of one such interdisciplinary approach in which students engage in project-based learning by investigating the influence of music on seed germination.
The learning activity is contextualized in the indigenous practice of playing music while planting crops. In this activity, the effect of various music genres on seed germination can be investigated — such as classical, rock, acid rock, pop, heavy metal, hip-hop, opera, rap, or ballads.
Students should formulate hypotheses for their investigations, based on known indigenous knowledge and practices. Most students will be curious to determine what effect their favorite music genre has on seed germination. In addition, as I realized while undertaking my own similar investigation, there are a large number of variables that students need to account for — such as season, light, heat, moisture, seed type, music genre, frequencies of the sound waves, volume, and time of exposure — which offers a powerful learning experience.
This complexity was demonstrated in the student posters that provided data for this article. The research reflected on here was inspired by a report of the World Intellectual Property Organization on agricultural practices in the Philippines and an article by Dimaporo and Fernandez on the same topic.
For the Maranao people in the Philippines, rituals form part of agricultural practices. Planting activities mainly for rice are accompanied by music, chanting, and dances World Intellectual Property Organization, Dimaporo and Fernandez claim that these ceremonies are not simply cultural or superstitious but relate to astronomy, quantum mechanics, and metaphysics. This led me to a comprehensive body of scientific literature on the influence of music on seed germination.

Since the s, experiments have been done on the influence of music on plant growth. It is of evolutionary importance that plants can sense and respond to environmental stimuli such as light, temperature, gravity, and touch Telewski, The perception of sound by plants would, therefore, also hold evolutionary benefit. It has been shown that sound, as an external factor, has a big influence on the biological index of plants Bochu et al. Additionally, Retallack and Broman , Vanol and Vaidya , and others have shown that, during controlled experiments, plants respond differently to different types of music.
Although the influence of sound waves on plant tissues is still not well understood, several research studies provide compelling evidence that sound waves influence plant cell morphology, biochemistry, and gene expression. It is important that students engage in the tentativeness of science as a tenet.
Thus, it is vital that they engage with literature and realize that, as the body of research evidence grows, plant physiologists are developing a more nuanced understanding of the mechanisms of action. Miranda provides an overview of research literature on the biological, psychological, and social effects of music on people; students could also be asked to focus on this aspect as part of their projects.

Two examples of the posters are shown in Figure 2.
